The History of Nice
Nice is a city in southeastern France with a rich history and culture. It is among the most famous sea resorts on the French Mediterranean. The city attracts lots of tourists with its cosmopolitan nature and marine beauty. The city developed under the influence of Greeks, Romans, Italians and French civilizations.
There are traces of human occupation of the territories of modern Nice dating back to 400,000 years BC. The city of Nice was established as a Greek colony approximately 350 years before the birth of Christ. The new settlement was called Nicaea and was probably founded by Greek settlers coming from Marseille. Thanks to its good location and climate the town quickly turned into an important trading post. Later, it was taken by the Romans and developed further.
In the 7th century the city of Nice joined the Genoese League. In the ensuing centuries the city was in a constant struggle against Saracen invaders who managed to conquer and pillage the city once. During the Middle Ages the city balanced between Italian, French, Savoy and Provence politics. For most part its citizens managed to sustain their municipal independence.

The city increased its significance under the rule of the Dukes of Savoy. Then, its naval forces increased gradually. New fortifications were built. The city repulsed several Barbary pirate invasions. During this time Italian was introduced as an official language in the city administration.
The second part of the 16th century was time of great trouble. Disease, famine and war ravaged the Nice. The city happened to be on the way of the French civil wars for the crown. Then, a French-Ottoman force invaded and pillaged the city. In the end of the 17th century the city returned to the control of the Dukes of Savoy- now Kings of Sicily. In the end of the 18th century Nice became French territory. In later years there were consequent rebellions organized by supporters of Garibaldi which wanted to unify the city with Italy. Those did not succeed. The city remains up to this day part of France.Nice Airport Car Hire
